Lange Research Group

Beginning Fall of 2021, I began my research with 3D printed concrete material. At first, I worked strictly under a professor, with the main goal of creating a mix that was extrudable from our 3D printer. After helping develop this mix, more problems arose with extrusion. The mechanism that pushed the concrete through the nozzle at the end was compressing the it too much, creating blockages. 

The solution to this issue ended up being replacing the extrusion mechanism with vibrators at nozzle, which took advantage of the rheologic properties of concrete. Now, I work under a PhD candidate who is writing his dissertation on this subject as a member of the Lange Research Group. 

A typical day in the lab for me includes batching and mixing concrete, assisting in running experiments and reporting data.

SE 101 Project - ACES Library

In May of 2022, my group finished our Systems Engineering 101 Project. After becoming familiar with Revit and similar BIM systems at the beginning of the semester, we were tasked with completely recreating an on-campus building from it's origional construction plans. The final report included our final sheets, energy analysis and solar study. Click through the slideshow to see more, or click on the links below to view the final product. 

Feasibility Study on Sustainable Campus Streetlights

My freshman year, I took an intro to Civil Engineering Class where we learned how to develop a feasibility study and use excel in engineering applications. The final project included writing a feasibility study on a topic of our own choosing. My group investigated the topic of converting the current LED streetlights on campus to microgrid solar powered streetlights. We focused our study on 1 particular street on campus, and then scaled our results to a campus-wide level. The final report included an executive summary, introduction, objectives, methodology, results and conclusion.

Fun Fact: groups presented their projects to a board of CEE alumna and faculty after the project was submitted. Our group's project was voted #1 for technical achievement out of 44 teams!

Environmental Conscious Firefighting Technology Development in Trinidad and Tobago

Last year, I had the unique opportunity to take a class focused on bridging the gap between engineering and global sustainability. As a part of this class, we were divided into groups and tasked with solving an engineering related issue for Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP).

Through communicating with members of FACRP, we learned that the organization was fighting forest fires with 5-gallon "backpacks" full of water. The unique terrain of the area makes it difficult for vehicles to access fires. Additionally, Trinidad and Tobago do not have a section of government dedicated to the environment, so funding is always difficult.

Our group was tasked with finding more sustainable and safer methods for firefighting in this region. We produced 3 different alternatives, each at different price points, for our final project.
